For the engineering firms that design these systems, the temperature sensors are no longer a standard line item; each installation has to be built around the tank itself. ## Customer/Application An engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) firm needed a [temperature sensor](https://www.ashcroft.com/products/temperature/s81-rtd-temperature-probe/) supplier for large-scale LNG, propylene, and petrochemical storage tank projects. In these tanks, temperature monitoring at the wall, bottom, and interlayer supports both process monitoring and leak detection. The sensors are supplied in two ways: as part of integrated tank gauging packages delivered through system integrators, or as standalone products bid directly to end users. Each project brings its own tank geometry, measurement point layout, and installation requirements. - Large-scale LNG, propylene, and petrochemical storage tanks - Wall, bottom, and interlayer temperature monitoring for leak detection - Long cable runs to reach measurement points across the tank - Project-based supply in which every installation requires a custom configuration ## Challenge The customer was looking for a supplier that could deliver accurate and reliable temperature measurement instruments built to the specific layout of each tank. That supplier also had to support the project beyond the point of sale. Because no two tanks share the same measurement points or cable lengths, a standard catalog product would not meet the requirement. The customer needed a supplier able to manufacture to project specifications, deliver on schedule, and provide engineering support from design through installation. - **Local manufacturing and supply:** Instruments manufactured and sold locally, for shorter lead times and competitive cost. - **Custom length at every measurement point:** Each point built to the length the project required, up to 150 m at 6 mm sheath diameter and up to 260 m at 4.8 mm sheath diameter. - **End-to-end engineering support:** Support covering product design, delivery, and installation guidance. ## Engineering Assessment An engineering assessment determined that the sensors would need to be designed around each tank from the start of the project, not adapted afterward. Three requirements shaped the approach: - **Measurement accuracy at every point:** Engineers needed to understand the actual measurement points and product layout during initial design to achieve optimal measurement accuracy across the tank. - **Installation design for long-term stability:** The installation structure had to be sound enough for stable operation over the life of the tank. This called for both strong manufacturing capability and extensive field experience. - **System integration:** The sensors had to work as part of a complete measurement system, including junction boxes, transmitters, and mounting hardware suited to each location on the tank. ## Solution The project followed Ashcroft's approach to EPC and large projects. Engineers worked directly with the EPC firm to design, develop, and deliver a custom instrument assembly, with support extending from initial concept through project completion. The result was a fully customized configuration of Ashcroft® [S80](https://www.ashcroft.com/products/temperature/s80-thermocouple-temperature-probe/) and [S81](https://www.ashcroft.com/products/temperature/s81-rtd-temperature-probe/) long-cable temperature sensors, built to each tank's measurement point layout. Engineering involvement started in the initial design phase and continued through delivery and installation guidance. That extended involvement, rather than any single product feature, is what allowed each configuration to meet the accuracy and installation requirements of the tank. - **Early design coordination:** Engineers worked with the EPC firm during initial design to map measurement points and product layout before manufacturing began. - **Integrated system supply:** Sensors could be supplied alongside junction boxes and temperature transmitters, based on the requirements of each project. - **Mounting accessories:** Installation accessories in aluminum alloy, stainless steel, and other materials were provided to suit different mounting locations on the tank. Accessories are generally required to be of the same material as the equipment, primarily to ensure material compatibility for welding and to meet the corrosion resistance requirements of the process medium. - **Local supply:** Local production and sales shortened lead times on custom orders. ## Result Since 2024, our [temperature sensors](https://www.ashcroft.com/products/temperature/s80-thermocouple-temperature-probe/) have been delivered across nine storage tank projects covering 20 tanks, both through system integrator partnerships and through direct end-user bids. - Lead times were reduced from 16 weeks to 12 weeks through local manufacturing and supply - The products were proven in both the integrated-package and direct-bid supply models - In one low-temperature tank project, 12 sets covering three storage tanks provided a total of 126 measuring points.
