Metals and alloys used in environments containing H₂S may be susceptible to cracking mechanisms that can compromise pressure containment and potentially lead to process leaks. Standards originally developed by the [National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE)](http://impact.nace.org/), now part of the [Association for Materials Protection and Performance (AMPP)](https://www.ampp.org/home), provide requirements for selecting metallic materials used in these environments. As the Product Marketing Leader for process gauges at Ashcroft, I have spent the past 15 years answering questions and guiding customers on the importance of ensuring compatibility between pressure instruments and process media. In this article, you will learn what NACE standards apply to sour gas and crude oil environments, why material compatibility matters and what to consider when selecting pressure instrumentation for these applications. ## What are NACE standards for sour gas and crude oil applications? **NACE standards establish requirements for metallic materials used in environments where hydrogen sulfide can cause sulfide stress cracking and other forms of environmental cracking.** NACE was established in 1943 by engineers in the pipeline industry to address corrosion and develop standards for selecting appropriate materials for harsh operating environments. In 2021, NACE and SSPC merged to form AMPP, but many established standards continue to use the NACE designation. Two standards are particularly important for sour gas and crude oil applications: - **[ANSI/NACE MR0103/ISO 17945](https://webstore.ansi.org/standards/nace/ANSINACEStandardMR0103ISO17945):** Addresses metallic materials resistant to sulfide stress cracking in corrosive petroleum refining environments. - **[ANSI/NACE MR0175/ISO 15156](https://webstore.ansi.org/standards/nace/ANSINACEMR0175ISO151562015SET):** Addresses materials used in H₂S-containing environments in oil and gas production. These standards focus on specific H₂S-related cracking mechanisms and material requirements. They do not address every form of general or localized corrosion that may occur in a process. They also apply to metallic materials, not plastics or elastomers. Operating conditions such as temperature, H₂S partial pressure, pH and material condition can affect whether a particular material is acceptable for an application. ## Why do pressure instruments need to meet NACE requirements? **Pressure instruments used in sour service need compatible wetted materials because exposure to H₂S can contribute to cracking and failure of susceptible metals.** Accurate and reliable pressure measurement is important for monitoring process performance and maintaining pressure containment. Material selection becomes especially important when the process contains corrosive compounds. Sour gas is natural gas containing [hydrogen sulfide (H₂S)](https://www.osha.gov/etools/oil-and-gas/general-safety/h2s-monitoring#:~:text=H2S%20fires%20and,where%20H2S%20exists.). H₂S is a highly toxic and flammable gas that can contribute to several forms of environmental cracking in susceptible metallic materials. If the wetted components of a pressure instrument are not suitable for the process conditions, cracking or other forms of material degradation may eventually affect the integrity of the instrument. Because of this, the chemical composition and operating conditions of the process should be evaluated against the pressure instrument's wetted materials. Another option is to isolate the pressure instrument from the process medium using a diaphragm seal. Temperature **Process temperature can significantly affect a material's resistance to corrosion and environmental cracking.** Stainless steels can be particularly sensitive to changes in temperature, especially when chlorides are also present. Temperature limits specified by the applicable material standard should therefore be considered during selection. ### 2. Process chemistry **The type and concentration of corrosive compounds in the process influence material compatibility.** Important compounds can include: - Hydrogen sulfide - Chlorides from salts or other sources - Carbon dioxide The concentration and interaction of these compounds help determine which metallic materials are suitable for the application. ### 3. pH **Process pH can influence both corrosion behavior and susceptibility to H₂S-related cracking.** More acidic conditions can increase corrosion rates and affect hydrogen uptake in susceptible metals. The applicable NACE standard should be consulted to determine material limitations for the specific environment. ### 4. Metallurgical condition **A material's hardness, heat treatment and metallurgical condition can affect its susceptibility to cracking.** Higher-strength or hardened materials may be more susceptible to certain H₂S-related cracking mechanisms. Material hardness and heat-treatment requirements are therefore important considerations when evaluating compliance with the applicable standard. ## How can you determine if a pressure gauge is NACE compliant? **The manufacturer's product documentation should identify whether a pressure gauge's materials and construction meet the applicable NACE requirements for the intended service conditions.** NACE compliance is not simply determined by selecting a particular alloy. The material must meet the requirements of the applicable standard under the expected process conditions. When evaluating an instrument: - **Review manufacturer documentation.** Check product datasheets, specifications and available material certifications for NACE compliance. - **Confirm the operating conditions.** Verify that temperature, pressure, process chemistry, H₂S exposure and other relevant conditions fall within the material's permitted limits. - **Consider laboratory testing when necessary.** Qualified laboratories can perform testing that reproduces applicable standard conditions to evaluate material suitability. - **Review documented field experience.** Proven service history under comparable operating conditions may provide additional information about material performance. When application conditions are uncertain, consult the applicable standard and work with the instrument manufacturer or a qualified materials specialist to determine appropriate materials. ## Which materials are used for sour gas and crude oil applications? **Materials used in sour service can range from stainless steels to nickel-based alloys and titanium, depending on the severity and specific chemistry of the process environment.** Common material options include: | Material | General consideration | | --- | --- | | 316 stainless steel and Alloy 20 | May be suitable for less severe corrosive conditions when permitted by the applicable standard | | Super duplex stainless steels | Can provide increased corrosion resistance for more demanding environments when applicable service limits are met | | Alloy 400 (Monel®) | Used in certain corrosive applications depending on process chemistry and operating conditions | | Hastelloy® C22/C276 | Provides high corrosion resistance for demanding chemical environments | | Titanium | Provides strong corrosion resistance in certain aggressive environments | Material selection should not be based on corrosion resistance alone. **The specific alloy, material condition and process environment must satisfy the requirements and limits established by the applicable NACE standard.** ## Ready to learn more?
